Barrel’s race
On the last Sunday of August in Montepulciano the famous barrel race named “Bravio delle Botti” takes place. This is an ancient tradition in which the town's “Contrade” (districts) compete by rolling wine barrels through the town streets. The eight “Contrade” San Donato, Cagnano, Gracciano, Talosa, Volataia, Poggiolo, Le Coste, and Collazzi, compete for the prize, which is a painted banner.
The barrels are empty of course, but even so they weigh 80 kg and the race is 1.8 km uphill. This is a really exciting race you cannot miss!!
